Climate Change and Economic impact on Russia

Climate changes will strongly have impact on all over the world. Most changes will be against nature; however there might be some short effective consequences for some regions. There is Russia, faced to ambiguity future with these changes in many subjects such as economic impacts and agriculture productivity. There are some pros impacts in long term whereas short cops in early future.

Increasing sea level considers as one of the most significant reasons. This incident which happens as a result of global warming and melting ice in arctic, would threat coastal cities. In addition, Russia’s population density is in coastlines, so when the sea level increase, some cities will flood in water, people will lose their homes and properties, this matter would have huge cost for government to serve disaster people. Moreover, coastlines which are the most strategic trading routes are in jeopardy. Goods usually import and export from important ports in both east coast, west coast and middle of Russia such as Black Sea, Caspian Sea and ST. Petersburg port. Russia is very dependent on trading goods specially importing foods from outside. Increasing sea level for almost 20 meters would devastate these ports and burden serious economic failure to the country.

Climate changes would have another serious impact on Russian’s people. Global warming cause’s permafrost, it means the frozen land will melt as a result of warmth and erosion. In this case vast part of frozen land which is Siberia in east of the Russia will be arable and become suitable for agriculture whereas the western part of the country which is known as “Breadbasket” will be arid. In 2010, unprecedented summer heat caused massive wildfires that dramatically reduced agricultural output in western Russia, destroying one third of the country’s wheat harvest. The country experienced another major heat wave with a devastating impact on agricultural output in the summer of 2012. Permafrost have had irreparable economic outcome for the country and will cause more problem in future. As a result of that, the Russia’s government has to imports more food and also compensates farmers.

Permafrost could have economically advantage for Russia in short time. Siberia which consist the vast part of the country will be arable because of global warming. The land becomes potentially fertile for agriculture productivity; therefore massive part of the land will be suitable for farming. As a result of that, Russia can increase food production, obtain all interior consumption and also export part of it, while it has been importing. Due to exporting food product, Russia can earn more money and develop its economy.

In sum, Russia’s economy has bloomy future because of climate changes. The infrastructures are in danger of collapse. Permafrost will negatively impact on huge part of the land and there are people who will suffer economically from impacts.
